Memorial Day Bike Ride

Monday, May 25, 2009 by Jordan

We’ve biked a lot around NYC so this weekend we decided to try something a little different. We had read a lot about the bike trails in Westchester, so we decided to make the hike out there and check out the Westchester North County Trailway on this beautiful Memorial Day.

Congrats Kim and Matt!

Sunday, May 24, 2009 by Jordan

Congratulations to our good friends Kim and Matt who tied the knot this weekend at an amazing wedding at Crystal Plaza in New Jersey. For a while there, we all thought that Mother Nature was not going to cooperate with them, but in the last minute, she came through with absolutely gorgeous weather for the outdoor ceremony. The rest of the night equally matched the magnificent ceremony (especially the ridiculous dessert spread!).

Happy Square Root Day!

Tuesday, March 3, 2009 by Jordan

Tuesday is Square Root Day, a rare holiday that occurs when the day and the month are both the square root of the last two digits of the current year. Numerically, March 3, 2009, can be expressed as 3/3/09, or mathematically as √9 = 3, or 3² = 3 × 3 = 9.

Yay!

Happy 3rd Birthday Sam

Sunday, January 4, 2009 by Aly

This weekend we celebrated our nephew Sam’s 3rd birthday. Friday night, for his actual birthday, we had every three year olds dream night: dinner at California Pizza Kitchen and dessert at Dylans Candy Bar.

Today, was his fabulous birthday party at the Central Park Zoo. The wonderful staff took the children on a scavenger hunt for the birthday boys crown and along the way we saw and “spoke to” lots of different animals.

Hello 2009

Sunday, January 4, 2009 by Jordan

It’s been a while since we’ve posted on here (thanks Facebook for using up all of our “posting time”). So, for starters, Happy New Year!

We also missed Chanukah and Christmas, so a belated Happy Holidays.

The past few weeks have been great because the way the holidays landed, we had lots of time off from work, so it has really seemed like a mini vacation. We wasted no time in the new year to take advantage of what NYC has to offer in the wintertime. After many years of wanting to go, we finally made it to The Pond skating rink this year. They offer free skating (although rentals cost $12) right smack in the middle of Bryant Park. Although it was a bit crowded and the rental skates were awful, we had a great time and enjoyed the nice winter weather.

Dickson’s Farmstand Meats

Sunday, January 4, 2009 by Jordan

Last year I reconnected with a good friend of mine from college, Jake Dickson. When we first met back up, Jake was telling me about the business that he planned on starting (after quitting his job in the finance world) which was basically a meat business focusing on locally sourced, quality meats. After building up quite an impressive meat resume over a long period (working in France, at a Cornell sheep farm, and different slaughterhouses), Jake finally launched Dickson’s Farmstand Meats this summer selling his product at various Brooklyn farmers’ markets. He has taken great care to search out local farms that fall within certain guidelines, mainly (quoted from his website):

* The entire supply chain (farm to slaughterhouse to point-of-sale) must be no more than 400 miles long.

* Animal based feeds, prophylactic antibiotics or added hormones are not administered at any point of the animal’s life.

* The animals from which our meat comes must spend their life on the farm - no CAFO (Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations) or feedlots.

Basically, Jake has taken the time to scout out the best meats that our local farms have to offer and by cutting out the middleman, ensures that you get great quality meat for a reasonable price. When the summer wound down, Jake spent some time developing an online store to sell his product (he’s hoping to secure an actual retail location soon). After hearing about Jake’s business and following his progress for months, last week I finally had the opportunity to try his product. I ordered 1 bone-in ribeye and 1 NY strip steak from his online store. What’s neat about ordering from here is that you can actually read about the farm where your meat came from (try getting that information in a supermarket!) Instead of shipping his product, Jake has several “pick up” locations throughout NYC where you can pick up your online order. The meats come professionally vacuum packed and frozen which allows you to store it for up to 6 months in your freezer. After the jump, comes the full review and mouth-watering pictures of the steaks. (Read on…)

Happy Pre-Thanksgiving

Tuesday, November 25, 2008 by Jordan

Thanksgiving is our favorite holiday for many reasons: You get several days off from work, you get to eat food, and be with your family. So this year we decided, why not have a second Thanksgiving a little early and celebrate with our friends also! We made the turkey and everyone else brought all the trimmings. Everyone also brought canned food which we donated to the soup kitchen at the Central Synagogue.

It was a lot of fun and there was lots of great food to eat.

In addition to the Turkey, we also made Sweet and Sour Meatballs (thanks for the great recipe Nana!), Pumpkin Spice Layer Cake, and Pumpkin Spice Marshmallows. And considering this was our first attempt at making a Turkey, we think it turned out pretty well!
