Last year I reconnected with a good friend of mine from college, Jake Dickson. When we first met back up, Jake was telling me about the business that he planned on starting (after quitting his job in the finance world) which was basically a meat business focusing on locally sourced, quality meats. After building up quite an impressive meat resume over a long period (working in France, at a Cornell sheep farm, and different slaughterhouses), Jake finally launched Dickson’s Farmstand Meats this summer selling his product at various Brooklyn farmers’ markets. He has taken great care to search out local farms that fall within certain guidelines, mainly (quoted from his website):
* The entire supply chain (farm to slaughterhouse to point-of-sale) must be no more than 400 miles long.
* Animal based feeds, prophylactic antibiotics or added hormones are not administered at any point of the animal’s life.
* The animals from which our meat comes must spend their life on the farm - no CAFO (Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations) or feedlots.
Basically, Jake has taken the time to scout out the best meats that our local farms have to offer and by cutting out the middleman, ensures that you get great quality meat for a reasonable price. When the summer wound down, Jake spent some time developing an online store to sell his product (he’s hoping to secure an actual retail location soon). After hearing about Jake’s business and following his progress for months, last week I finally had the opportunity to try his product. I ordered 1 bone-in ribeye and 1 NY strip steak from his online store. What’s neat about ordering from here is that you can actually read about the farm where your meat came from (try getting that information in a supermarket!) Instead of shipping his product, Jake has several “pick up” locations throughout NYC where you can pick up your online order. The meats come professionally vacuum packed and frozen which allows you to store it for up to 6 months in your freezer. After the jump, comes the full review and mouth-watering pictures of the steaks. (Read on…)
